In an interesting development (not sure if it has happened before) a prominent group is endorsing a Vice Presidential candidate before we have selected a nominee. The Hill has the story
The U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce plans on endorsing Housing Secretary Julian Castro for vice president, according to a report from Politico.
“Millions of people living in this country look to Julian as the gatekeeper of American dream,” said Javier Palomarez, the group's president and CEO.
“[We are] happily endorsing him for the vice presidency,” he continued. "We’ve grown to know him. We’ve seen him in action and feel very comfortable endorsing him.”
While Castro is a Clinton supporter and surrogate, they are not (yet) endorsing a Presidential candidate in the primary
“I’m not saying I’m not a fan of Hillary’s, but we’re not prepared yet to endorse any one of the presidential candidates,” he said.
“I’ve had conversations with other candidates running for the presidency and they’re [interested in adding Castro to their ticket]. We should wait and see how things land.”
Palomarez said that the group's backing does not change its aim of nonpartisanship on behalf of Hispanic business interests.
Very interesting to see pressure for Vice Presidential selection coming before we even have a nominee, we will have to see how this plays out going forward.
